Six Villanelle Season 3 Looks that still Resonate
‘Killing Eve’ is BBC’s phenomenal psychological thriller featuring three women as leader characters within the series, and a new female writer for every season of the series. The show is best known for female assassin Villanelle and M.I. 6 agent Eve Polastri duo facing off throughout every season. The closer they become, the more the world wants to tear them apart, and they both realize they may actually be working for the same people if they go high up enough.
Villanelle is best known for her outstanding fashion statements throughout the series, and as the outfits resonate, the expectations grow every season for Villanelle. Villanelle left us with some outfits in Season two, such as the two-tone pink skirt duo, that left many fans rushing to the nearest outlet store to replicate this very look. In Season three, the bar was raised even higher, and Villanelle absolutely delivered for the fans of ‘Killing Eve’.
In this haunting build-a-bear-esque scene featuring many playful children with stuffed animals, Villanelle is sporting a pinstripe grey suit by Chalayan. This is the notorious scene where we finally get to hear exactly where Villanelle stands with her feelings for Eve, and although she is a professional at masking her true feelings, Eve is the one person who can break her down. Villanelle’s eyes clearly begin to gloss up as she mentions Eve’s name and the thought of her still being alive.
Villanelle tries to convince herself and others that she is over Eve, mainly because she is presumed to be dead. Once Villanelle’s next job is in London, emotions quickly begin to resurface and take over her body as she faces a tough decision. It had been a long time since she was face to face with Eve, which ended in rejection (and Eve getting shot), but Villanelle is persistent with her love for Eve.
This colorful cotton dress by La Double J is shown during the scene where Konstantin informs Villanelle that Eve is still alive. Following this news, Villanelle begins to dissociate from the conversation and looks to nearly faint in this scene. This colorful ensemble gives vibes from the seventies and also has a Spanish kick to it; considering Villanelle now lives at a mansion in Spain.
This scene is interesting, because it begins with her entering her home with Konstantin already there. This is ironic, because it is a tactic that Konstantin would use at Villanelle’s old apartment, back when he was her “handler”. In this scene, Villanelle makes it very clear that Konstantin is no longer allowed to show up to her house unannounced, and becomes furious with him. This may also tie into the scene from the end of Season two, where Konstantin chose his family over Villanelle when it came to leaving. This may have sparked such an infuriated response from seeing his face again.
Konstantin has a habit of slipping in and out of people’s lives as he pleases, and it’s beginning to catch up with him as the series continues on. He has a very brash background that he refrains from talking about. There are rumors that have been circulating since Carolyn’s son Kenny took his live in Episode one of Season three, entertaining the idea that Konstantin could’ve been his father. All of this comes to a head in the Season three finale episode, where Carolyn has a gun to Konstantin’s head demanding answers.
In the premiere episode of Season three, the show begins with Villanelle’s wedding. She is seen sporting a black tuxedo style blazer by Loewe with subtle sensual additions and floral lace down the center; a true Villanelle look. Throughout the wedding Villanelle seems bothered or irritated by a presence that she cannot place her eyes on. She gives a very cryptic speech where she subtly talks about the relieving death of her ex (Eve), and how she is now able to move on and love once again.
It’s evident in this scene that she doesn’t believe a word coming out of her own mouth, but she plays it off. She continues to be bothered by someone lurking around her wedding reception hall, and finally lays her eyes on Dasha. Villanelle becomes enraged and charges Dasha, causing the entire reception to erupt into chaos, confusion, and sadness. Villanelle’s wedding day was promised to be her day off, but Dasha showed up with a contact to end the celebration of happiness early.
Although this is my absolute favorite look from Villanelle in Season three, I will remain unbiased. This elegant top by Petar Petrov; pants by Maison Rabih Kayrouz, duo is short-lived during this scene. Villanelle heads to a perfumery, where she plans to have the artist create a scent that she will wear the day she meets Eve again. She gives a very detailed and impossible description of what she wants included in this particular scent. She makes it known that she will pay whatever the price for this perfume to be perfect for the occasion.
Startled, the perfume artist begins to take detailed notes as Villanelle continues to rattle off more descriptions leading to what she would like the perfume to smell of. I, personally, am rather disappointed that this scene doesn’t last for very long, but this look is absolutely stunning and well-fitting of Villanelle’s stylish character. This outfit has been purchased and/or duped by many fans throughout social media. This was one outfit that sold out almost immediately after the episode aired, which goes to show how heavily Villanelle’s character style influences fans and those who are a fan of fashion.
In this scene, it’s our first time being introduced to Villanelle’s new lifestyle in Season three. She wears a floral dress from Vampire’s Wife that represents her flourishing where she currently is in life. Villanelle had been anticipating a promotion, so she’d been on her best behavior ever since. She tells others that she is “moving up in the world”, as she becomes more and more respected in her line of work for her precision and expertise.
She becomes promoted to handler, which she isn’t fairly excited about, but she realizes she has to prove she can handle the pressure. Soon after, she proves that she cannot and luckily gets promoted even further after Dasha is told to drive a wedge between Villanelle and Eve, by framing her for a murder that hits home (literally). In this scene Villanelle is starting to feel more and more freedom as she moves up the ranks, although Konstantin reminds her that it isn’t the case.
This unforgettable look from Season three, is worn during a golf-outing scene. Villanelle is tasked with a contact to assassinate, but Dasha must join her for supervising. Dasha and Villanelle are being held on very tight leashes after a series of mess-ups conducted by both parties. In this outing, Villanelle becomes very fed up with Dasha’s halitosis and her mocking Villanelle for becoming too “sloppy”. Villanelle has begun to lose her touch, as she becomes injured during one of her assassin jobs.
Villanelle begins to feel the pressure from her bosses and realizes Konstantin was right about there truly being no way out of the job. She becomes anxious and unable to focus, and therefore ends up getting injured as she hesitates before killing her target. Now that she is stuck with Dasha while at the golf-outing, she seizes the opportunity. While the two of them are luring their expected target into the woods to retrieve their golf ball for them, Villanelle attacks Dasha instead of the intended target.
This scene is very memorable, mainly because of the outfit she is sporting, which may have been intentional. It’s hard to forget a scene where Villanelle is wearing huge towering green feathers. This statement outfit is by Charlotte Knowles and was flooded all throughout different fashion media blogs immediately after the episode aired.
In the final scene of Season three, Villanelle and Eve are left with a decision. Villanelle is rocking a mustard yellow coat by Loewe. This scene is a more upsetting cliffhanger, because we truly don’t know what’s next for these two. They love each other, but everyone is trying to keep them apart. Although Eve realizes that Dasha set up Villanelle, she still seems unsure of what to do, knowing her true feelings for Villanelle are real and genuine. The two of them have been avoiding their feelings for several episodes now, by trying to focus on work and life, but then realizing they are each other’s life.
All of the outfits in Season three were amazing, and that only keeps the expectations high for Season four. ‘Killing Eve’, has been officially renewed for a Season four, but reports are saying that shooting the show has been suspended indefinitely due to COVID-19 concerns from staff and officials. It remains to be confirmed that shooting Season four has not yet begun, because that will mean that Season four will less likely be available early 2021 as predicted, and it will possibly be delayed until fall 2021 or early 2022. This is horrific news for fans, but the safety of the cast and staff comes first.
Knowing that there will definitely be a Season four in the works is reassuring, and all we can do is be patient and enjoy the art that has been created and produced for us thus far.
